“Menstruation is a deeply shamanic experience of death and rebirth; we are releasing and rebirthing in a profound bio-spiritual journey. It is also a very primal moment when we remember our true origins.”
– Dr. Azra and Seren Bertrand.
Conscious Menstruation is an ancient feminine practice that brings deep feminine wisdom to your womb that awakens your innate ability to be one with nature. When we honor our monthly blood and the process of release, this magical awareness unlocks our inner strengths connecting us with life and mother nature.
I am on the 3rd day of my periods as I write this and this is the first time, I am practicing the art of conscious menstruation. Yesterday, I softly cupped my womb with both my hands with a lot of awe and admiration for this life force energy stored in my body that manifests itself in the form of blood.
Yes, menstruation is a much more esoteric process than what we can ever imagine. Let us learn the path of conscious menstruation –
Conscious menstruation refers to the profound awakening that is possible when we embrace our monthly bleeding with deep awareness and self-love – Sofia Sundari
Connection with Moon
Menstruation is also known as “moontime” in some ancient cultures. It is because the moon is considered the most feminine planet. The moon is changeable in the form in the same way as us women. Just as the Moon waxes (growing outward into the night sky) until it becomes full and then wanes (getting smaller) as if moving inward into self – so do women.
Sometimes, in her monthly cycle, she shows up fully, open, bright, reaching out. Other times – she covers her face, retreats, falls back, quietens herself. Women are in the same pattern as the Moon – I find this really beautiful. So what happens during the New Moon is exactly what happens with us women when we bleed – we hide and internalize. And Full Moon corresponds to the time of ovulation – the time when we are at our peak, feeling energetic, active, and being social.
This monthly bleeding that all women share, unites us no matter what else sets us apart. At any one time in this world, millions of women are bleeding. In your journey of conscious menstruation, take a moment to connect to the feminine essence inside you and in your sisters across the globe who are bleeding at the same time as you. This is a divine connection that unifies all the women and brings forth the collective power of universal feminine wisdom to you.
Hold your womb with love
The womb is a physical metaphor of the divine cosmos, of the consciousness. The womb is the void, the place of nothingness, from which all of life emerges, like the emptiness of space that holds all life. Our womb is our inner sanctum, a place to access our intuitive wisdom, our intrinsic power. We all come from this magical, profound place. You can hold your womb with love, gratitude, and prayer invoking higher powers of this sacred place.
Relationship with Menstruation
Let us ask and answer a few questions about our relationship with our cycles, these questions will help deepen our understanding and respect about our menstrual cycles and will enable us to relate to them more consciously.
- How did you receive your first period?
- Did you celebrate it enough?
- How was the reaction of your close relatives?
- What is for you to menstruate now? Any psychological, physical, or energetic changes?
- Do you celebrate it every month? Are you able to feel gratitude these days?
- Can you read the messages that your body sends you through this cycle?
- How would you like your menstrual cycle to be? What changes do you see?
Create your sacred moments, relax
Love yourself at this time! Spending some time alone is another form of self-love. Look at the sky, listen to the birds, write a journal, listen to your favorite music. By all means connect with your feminine side – Like applying a natural face pack, a relaxing shower, yoni massage – whatever works for you! Settle in your alarm, and take time to recharge. You will see by spending only 15 to 30 minutes per day! you get so much nourishment at this time.
It is a taboo ridden belief that menstruation is dirty and menstrual blood is impure and that women should work as much as men during their periods to feel equal. In reality, women are very powerful during menstruation, our ability to feel and sense is increased.
The best thing to do during a period, and especially on the first day is to rest as much as possible, stay internalized, and meditate. We need to rest not because our energy is bad but because by resting we invoke increased psychic abilities that this period grants us. It’s a lack of understanding about menstruation that creates mood swings. If you deny the natural need during your periods to slow down and turn inward, feelings of unhappiness, frustration, and anger will surface. The great news is that once you are more aligned with your periods, your mood swings will diminish or even disappear!
